Meet our DSPs!
In honor of Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, we're featuring DSPs throughout the week so you can get to know The Guild’s incredible staff members! Read on to learn more about two of our outstanding DSPs:
Norman Rutinwa, Teaching Assistant
When did you start working at The Guild?
I started working at The Guild in April of 2006.
What do you enjoy about working in human services?
I like the challenge of working with students and their different needs. My child also has special needs, so I like to help other kids because I know the challenges that they are going through.
Do you have a favorite memory from working with a student?
There was one student that joined The Guild when he was 10 or 11, and I worked with him through his graduation. We had a close bond, and it was great to see him grow and become independent. It’s the best feeling, to watch students grow and change. It gives you a sense of happiness.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to play basketball, spend time with my kids, and go to church.
May Kawaala, Residential Assistant - Billerica House
When did you start working at The Guild?
I started working at The Guild in 2015.
What do you enjoy about working in human services?
I really love working with people, and I know that this is my passion and calling – taking care of others. We are all really equal, and we are all special. It's important to treat people with disabilities with respect to create a strong relationship with them. Being respected impacts our individuals’ quality of life.
Do you have a favorite memory from working with a student or resident?
We had one resident who displayed some challenging behaviors, and I felt really attached to her. When you can get across to someone, you feel a lot of compassion towards them. Working with her made me feel in my heart that I really love my job.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am a minister and a counselor. I’m also hoping to finish my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Springfield College in Boston.
